USB not working at all

First off, I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2, fully updated and all that jazz. Now, for the problem at hand. Just yesterday I realized that none of the USB ports worked...I couldn't properly connect my ipod, portable HD, or anything else. I connect the device, and nothing happens. Yesterday, an error message bubble would show up, saying that my device had malfunctioned or something. Now nothing happens when I connect things, and under device manager it simply states that it's not recognized. I have USB 2.0, I have the latest drivers, and I can't roll back (only have 1 driver). I would just reinstall windows, but since I can't connect my portable HD, I have nothing to back up my gigs upon gigs of important files.

I read all of those and attempted the solutions, but none seemed to work.
