How does one restore active desktop when the restore active desktop doesn't do it in Windows XP?

if xp is not functioning properly, then you may have other issues.
it may be time to do a full scan for virus, spyware and anything else that may have caused the problem,

another option that is possible is to do a restore to a date when all was working fine.

Post Restore XP Desktop

Xp does not have restore active desktop.

Click
Start-->Control Panel-->Performance and Maintenance--->Sytem icon....Click on Advance Tab under Performance Click "Settings"...to get to "Visual Effects" tab---Select Let windows choose what's best.

This will return your desktop to original visual settings that was install for your display, then you can set up the background as usual by right clicking over the desktop and choosing "properties".

Of course if you were just messing with display setting and nothing more, then I think this is what you were looking for.

wizzer Windows XP has a RESTORE ACTIVE DESKTOP button. I was usually able to punch it to restore my desktop. But it was inoperative. What you suggested worked just fine. I could get to the menu by right clicking on MY COMPUTER > Properties...etc.

The situation occured when I was using Drive Image XML, a new freeware disk imager, to restore my computer. The active desktop got ugly white, etc. The RESTORE ACTIVE DESKTOP button wouldn't work.

I thought the latest image was bad, so I restored known stable images. But I got the same problem. My old Drive Image 2002 by PowerQuest never failed me, but I was just trying this because of able to write files without shutting down and write to NTFS.
