Hi there,
I have Me on a 40g hd in a dell 4100 series. I would like to put a new 80g hd with XP home and use 40g as a slave. What I need to know is can I copy files from Me hd to new XP hd and then just reformat the hd and use it as a back up storage? Also when formating the new hd is done do I need to take out the cd and put in the drivers cd for the computer and load them at this time, or can I just let XP continue to load and install the drivers after the install is completed. Thanks for any help in this matter. Jim

Do you have 80g HD with XP already installed on it or you will install it on 80 g HD, and about witch drivers are you asking. When installing windows XP you always let windows finish it's setup process exept at very begining when you need to install tird party SATA drivers (RAID drivers). And yes you should be able to copy files from windos ME to windows XP (if you mean on files that you would like to save(movies, music, etc...) ) .
But if you would like to use Xp already installed on HD you will have to do REPAIR INSTALL( http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm )of Windows XP, because of configurations and settings. And after you have installed XP and saved your favorite files and folders you can just reformat the old (40g) HD and use it like backup storage or whatever.

Thanks for the reply, XP is going on a new drive and the hd which has the me is being used right now will then be change to slave. My major concern is that I would have 2 os systems and didn't want to cause any conflicts. The drives would be staright ide drives. Your right about the files(photo's,music programs, ect. If I get you right XP has to be installed last to be the os for the computer correct. Thats right I would reformat the hd and make it a storage/backupdrive. Thanks for the help Macko72. Jim
PS: I won't have to worry about drivers because XP will find the best one for items in the computer. I had run a pre screen check for compatibility and the only thing that would have to change is the sound card, other wise seems like everything else would work. |

1st Install new HD (80g) ( if u use 80 pin connector put both HD on CS (cable selection))
2nd Install Windosw XP 3rd Transfer files you would like to keep 4th Reformat the old HD and you have free 40 gigs If your computer is runing on Win ME don't you worry about drivers XP will have them in setup files, they maybe aren't the newest ones but they were the best ones at time of making of yours version of Win XP. So if you need update it will update it's self or you can do it thru http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us . Here is useful website : http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...p_sg_clean.asp And make sure that you have SP2 ready if not on CD then here is the one: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a Last edited by macko72; 04-24-2006 at 05:03 PM. |

Hi k9bliss, I have just done this with one of my computers, I unplugged my original drive and installed the new drive as master and installed xp on it.
I then set the jumper of the old drive to "slave" and re-connected it. this way you wont get that annoying dual boot up choice thing at boot up. Ther is no need to format your old drive, you can keep all your currnent files and stuff on the old drive and access it from XP. All you need to do if you dont want ME on the old drive is delete the Windows folder and the Programs folder from the old drive and thats it. you still got all your other stuff on there and you can delete the things you dont want in your own trime
