Cannot type URL into IE address bar

I know this is not a lot of info to go on, but does it sound like a familar problem to anybody? My mom just sent me this email and needs some help. I haven't been able to figure it out for her...

"I haven't been able to type a web address into the web address bar. If I do, the little microsoft flag at the top right just moves and nothing happens. The only way I can get to a new website is to plug it into google and go that way."

She is using IE 6.0.2800 on XP with SP2.

Any ideas much appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds like it could be a virus, do a virus scan and see what shows up.

The PC appears to be clean. She has McAfee, Ad-Aware, and Counter Spy. She does a good job of running them regularly.

Again...It's not my machine and my mom lives about 100 miles away so it's hard to experiment with different fixes, but I'd appreciate any ideas.

Thanks...

4/25 is when Micorsoft releases it's latest patch to fix the damage the last patch did.
One of the problems it caused is your friend's.
So, with any luck, she'll have no problems after Tuesday's update.

OK...Another question then...

I have the same IE and XP versions and haven't had any problems. What about the environment makes certain machines vulnerable? Any ideas?

Here is an article that lists several things that the patch conflicts with. It could be one of them, or another one that didn't get reported in time to make the article.
