Old HD in new machine

I have tried to install a HD from and old computer into a new computer. I thought that all I would have to do is do a repair install of XP Pro. I have not had any luck doing this. I get to the point where the system reboots, and then it doesn't reboot. Old machine specs:
Dell 8100 P4 1. G
250 GB WD HD
Windows XP Pro
768 MB RAM

New machine specs:
AMD 3800 Athlon 64 X2
ASUS A8N-E MOBO
250 GB WD HDsame one as above.
2 GB Corsair XMS Dual Channel
Windows XP Pro
EVGA 7600 GT
NEC 3550 DVD-CD RW...
Sony Floppy

What is the problem?

The XP version from the Dell will only work with the Dell. I believe Dell has it tied to the Dell BIOS. You probably will need a new XP Pro.

The XP Pro version was a retail version that I used to upgrade over the original Windows ME that came on the machine. Windows ME woke up on a new planet each day?! Anyway, that should not have been the issue. Any other ideas?

Are you using the recovery console, or skipping to setup and choosing repair there. See this.
