Windows XP and DSL

My computer has Windows XP and 500 mbytes of RAM and 2 GHZ speed. I was using a dial connection until recently. The computer opened most programs in 2 to 3 seconds, and quickly switched between programs [Word, Outook, IE] with no problem.

When I got DSL I noticed that although the internet speed was of course much faster, my computer slowed down. Programs open noticably slower and when I try to switch between two programs it can take several seconds before it finally responds.

I suspect the DSL connection is "taking over". Is there any network setting I can change to fix this?

Also, when I later added a new virus program [McAffe] the computer got a little slower yet. Is there anything I can do about that?

Sounds like Adware/Spyware infestations. And you're right, McAwful will slow things down to. I'd recommend dumping McAfee in favor of AVG Free Edition from Grisoft.com. Plus download and run scans with Adaware and Spybot - Search and Destroy. Then use the online scanner at Ewido.net to remove any remaining pests.

Is AVG a reliable Viruse detector? Or is there a commerical one that is better?

Very reliable. I use it on all my machines and all my customers. Must less intrusive than Norton/Symantec or McAfee. AVG makes a commercial product too. Same as the Free version but you also get free support with the pay version. Why pay when you can get quality for nothing?

What exact DSL service and modem do you have? If you, for example, have a USB modem and/or SBC/AT&T Yahoo and installed all the software from the provider, you will choke the computer to death. SBC's yellow CD is worse than AOL.
