Have you installed all your windows updates? How many processes do you see running in your process manager and what is the average process usage at idle?

at idle its about 5% cpu usage, but i have some stuf runing right now. it says there is 42 procceses running. this is weird, last time i updated it it did this to, then after i updated it i got a bunch of viruses and had to reformat my hardrive. i installed all the windows updates it said i had to. i am thinking could it be that the firewall is on?

There's an uninstall option for SP2 in Add/Remove Programs. But before you do that, let's try to determine what's wrong (since everybody else can run SP2 without slow downs). I'm thinking maybe you have too little memory, SP2 uses more memory than SP1 and if you're low on memory, things really start to slow down. Press ctrl-shift-escape and tell us the figures for Physical Memory under the Performance tab.

If you uninstall SP2, you will simply revert to the state before you installed SP2, maybe SP1 if that was installed before. You have more than enough memory so that can't be it. There's a bad Microsoft patch that was autoupdated last week, it can be related since it would be automatically installed after you installed SP2. Look for 908531 under updates (check the "Show Updates" checkbox in Add/Remove Programs) and remove it. If that fixes it, you can keep on using SP2.

That's odd, I can remove it on my machine. Are you sure you're looking at the right patch number ? Microsoft has also spread a new nagging update that will nag people about unofficial xp keys, and that could not be removed like you describe, but that's not the same 908531 patch.

Are you using any HP software (like included with a printer/scanner/camera) ?

Although I've never done it I bet you could remove sp2 using system restore to revert back to sp1. There is a lot of good stuff in sp2 so whatever you do I would try to end up with it in the end. It sounds to me like your hard drive is going bad. How old is it? Something you might want to take a look at is a tab in system properties. Once there if you click the Settings tab under Performance and uncheck everything it might help. Are there any errors in your event viewer? I would update all my drivers using the manufacturers web site if you haven't already as well.
