hibernation issue
I recently had problems with my computer where the system was acting kind of like there was a virus or spyware acting up (system freezing, different intermittent programs crashing, etc). After several scans from several different programs (and even having to do some stuff in safe mode) and not finding anything bad except for possible data corruption and having to uninstall Nero, I finally figured it was time to do an OS repair (windows XP). So I did that a couple of weeks ago and now I'm trying to do the hibernate feature. Now it's doing something it's never done before. It'll try to go into hibernation, but before it can go to that screen where it shows a meter as it's performing the hibernation process, it just comes back to the desktop with my network monitor telling me that it has reconnected - as if I've just booted back up from hibernation! Has this happened to anyone else?
PC specs: windows xp on a 120 GB HDD 150 GB RAM AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Chaintech Nvidia Nforce 7njl3 mobo As a note: before now I've hibernated successfully so many times I'm impressed with the function. This is the first time I've not been able to do so.

Found this page on MS website regarding Hibernation problem on computers with 1 GB of RAM:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330909 The issue above was addressed in SP2. Did you reinstall SP2 after you did the OS repair? I believe you have to reinstall any service packs after doing a repair install of the OS.

I have SP2 streamlined with the OS. Also, why would this be the first time I've had this issue if I've had 1.5 GB of memory in my system for over a year?

I had an HP Pavillion desktop that would do the same thing as you describe. Except I would get an error message saying that my Com 1 device driver is preventing the computer from entering hibernation mode. I tried disabling the com 1 device and entering hibernation but I received another error message this time saying that my sound card device driver was preventing my computer from entering hibernation mode. Since hibernation mode was not essential to me and everything else was working fine, I decided not to troubleshoot this problem any farther. Sorry my suggestion was not able to help you. |

Well Cisridn, that patch seems to have worked. I guess something got messed up in my troubleshooting and repairing and is now fixed. For the most part it worked. I just tried hibernating twice, the first time showed my NIC wasn't connecting. Then in the process of messing with the cable back there I bumped the PC and caused it to spontaneously reboot. Oops. When it came back I tried putting it back on hibernation and this time it worked seemingly without issue. Anyway, thanks for pointing out the patch.

Now, have any idea of how to get a Windows 2000 server PC to be able to use Terminal Services and Hibernation? I sometimes need to use Remote Desktop from this XP PC to do stuff on it. Remote Desktop apparently requires Terminal Services to be enabled on 2000 server. But as long as I have Terminal Services enabled on the machine, Hibernation is not possible. Know any workarounds?

Sorry, I don't know of any workarounds for that.

You are going to have to use Standby instead of Hibernation.

I can only get Standby when Terminal Services are disabled.
