need bootable and utility to fix unmountable drive volume

Already tried the xp cd and chkdsk /p and chkdsk /r
with no success.
Ran 3 days and would not finish just kept going back to 50 percent and
hanging there.
Tried fixboot with no help.
Need a bootable cd iso with utilities to fix this.
Anyone have any ideals much appreciated as of course there is some
very important work files not backed up.
would like freeware for one time use if anyone knows of anything.
Thanks mq1

UBCD or ubcd4win might be what you are looking for. Both are bootable, free and contain a lot of diagnostics and utilities.
Have you tried slaving the hard drive into another computer and seeing if you can get to your files that way?

not yet as it is a laptop and havent figured out how to do it.
Did finish a scan with chkdsk /p in 12 hrs on a 80gig drive.
now when it boots up it says it stopped initialization. So I did the fixboot
with the same results.
Still need help.
Will check out you leads.

Remove the hard drive, take it out of its holder, use an adapter, and slave it into a desktop computer to attempt data recovery. Here's an adapter:
