Unhappy 98SE reloded, but no sound?

I think this happend to me before and you guys told me something easy to do. I need that help again now. I'll write it down on the 98 Cd this time.

I finally got this thing back up. It's been down for a couple months. No time to fool with it.
I sure did miss the I/net though.

I init'd the hard drive, reloaded 98SE, but then I had to pay a guy to make a CD that would put the Sound and Video drivers on the Hard drive for me. (Anything else to add to my fury?)

I could gripe all night about this, but when I get the sound hooked up, there's no sound at all.
the Speakers are connected correctly.

The download fixed the Video, but the audio is still missing.

What does the device manager show? You may need to reload the sound drivers again.

In the BIOS....? Is that the Setup? The F-1 key during power up?

And the Device managers! I can vaguely remember that. I'll try those both, without knowing what to look for or change.
If nothing good happens, I'll be back. (but I'll let you know what happens anyway)

Do you have a volume control icon in the task bar ??

If so, it could be muted.

If no icon in the task bar, you must go into control panel and add the volume control to the task bar.

This may not be it, but it is the simplest thing to start with. HTH

still no sound.
Roy, there's no sound control Icon. I went to the control panel and didn't find anyplace to add that icon. I'm Icon challenged I guess.

I went to the Gateway site to download the Sound for myself.
Sooooo confusing.
I clicked on something I thought would fix my PC sound problem. Something like (Regristry....) something or other.
Now I have a terriblly slow PC again. And an "ITT school" Pop-up. I was shocked that Gateway would allow such malicious activity.

When I tried to load the Sound off this CD I paid for, it show's the sound program, but when I click on "have Disk" the PC cant seem to see the program.

I'll try Gateway again. It's a very complex site to muddle through.

this is drving me bats, still no sound

I went to gateway.
Now I have the 4m and 8m sound driver programs loaded onto my PC.

When I follow the instructions I wind up with a Box wanting me to select a program to open the eapc18m,ecw file.

What the heck?
It seems like every time I'm told to do something, I'm prevented from doing the instruction by some other instruction or question.

Gateway told me to use my Gateway Re-install disk. I lost that disk.
Two moves and some storage time, and all those Gateway books and other stuff is gone.

I asked the Gateway tech for instructions to get a replacment disk. I also asked him if that would be the only way to get sound into my pc? Why wont the downloads work?

Do you guys have another approach I could use?

Those .ecw files are simply midi wavesets. They are not needed for basic sound functionality. What you NEED is the correct DRIVER for your sound card.

Open your device manager and list everything that has a yellow ! or a red X next to it. Post the exact model of this Gateway computer, and tell us whether the sound card is a card or integrated on the motherboard.

OK, in the Device manager it says:

a yellow exclamation mark: PCI Multimedia audio device.
Under properties for that label it says: Hardware version 006

This sound card must be intregated on my Mutha board.
There are no boards in my pc except the Modem. A U.S. Robotics Fax modem.

You might want to try a gogle search for the model # and "sound drivers" to hopefully get you to driverguide.com. You'll have to register but then should be able to download a zipped executable or straight out executable that will extract the sound chip drivers. They normally install into a temporary location and you can install them from there.
Normal install is to get to the device manager and click on the driver with a problem and tell it to reload by pointing to the current location of the new one.

Download and run belarc free advisor, then post the results here. I'm curious about which mainboard you have, then maybe we can give you a link to the correct driver. The model of your Gateway would also be handy.

It's *probably* something like a Soundblaster 64V but we do need the exact motherboard model from Belarc - and the exact Gateway model.

OK, I'll get the Belarc info and post it.
I was in contact with a guy at Gateway. He said I had to load all the sound downloads, and then install them.
What a bust that was. I got two of the three downloads. A 4m and an 8m program.
The other download was listed at 41 minutes @56K.
I dont remember any program loading taking 41 minutes on this PC.

To install those is a maze of dead ends.
At one point a box appeared and I was asked which Program I wanted to open the target with? Jeez? If they are asking a question like that, surely they must know I'd not know the answer!
You are right in reading a little frustration in my post. I'm frazzled over this thing.

I asked this guy how to get the Disk that came with the PC, so I could just re-install all the drivers. He hasn't answered that one yet!

OK, Belarc coming up.

7510802.exe is the driver you do need for that sound chip. It's an ES1373.

7510802.exe - Creative Labs Audio PCI 64D and 128D Digital Sound Card (1373 chipset) patch, version 5.12.01.4037b
Supports: Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98SE, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 95
6/25/2001
16,848 KB

To install the waveset AFTER the drivers are installed (and you do NOT need both - just load up the 4m version) - extract the eapci4m.ecw file from the executable and put it in c:\windows, then to install go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Sound video and game controllers. Double click ..AudioPCI.. and select the Settings tab. Click Add Waveset and select this file.

If all that does not work and you are sure you have the onboard sound enabled in the bios then you may want to disable it and buy a cheap sound card for 20bucs or less..

I got the download. Fourtyone minutes of it.
But it all went wrong with the instructions. Niether GLC's instructions nor the Gateway instructions worked.
I'm tired of it tonite. It's so disgusting when I select something and nothing happens,

I'll be back late tomorrow night.

What happens when you run that driver package you downloaded? (I'm NOT concerned about the waveset - just the driver for now)

UPDATE,
The fix was to delete the Sound (Yellow questionmark) in the System program.
Then follow the instructions on installing the programs.
I got started, it was taking too long and was't working like the instructions said it would, so I took it to a local PC guy and he fixed it.
It's all better now.

You guys were getting right to it.

What was wrong was the difference in your vocabulary and mine. I just didn't understand what to do, and I didn't know what to do next, when the instructions failed.
If I'd have had more patience, we probably would have fixed it later the evening of the 20th.

Thanks a million.

Uninstall the sound driver in the Device Manger. Restart the computer. The add new hardware wizard should pop up,search for the correctdriver and install it. If that fails, you will probably need the setup CD that came with the PC from the manufacturer.

Chuck, you really need to stop digging up these old threads that have a solution already posted in them. You don't seem to be reading anything but the initial problem. glc has suggested in another thread that you need to read all the interim responses before adding something that is already included in a previous post. Please observe that suggestion. Thanx.
