xp on laptop question
my laptop is running slower and slower and i want to reinstall xp home that is on my laptop. but the problem is that i lost the recovery cd for it. so i bought a new xp home for the laptop. my question is will the new xp that i just bought work with the old key that came with the laptop. so basically its a new cd but old key. when i bought the laptop it didn't come with service pack 2, it was just basic xp, will an xp that included with sp2 work with the xp home cd key that was originally used on my laptop

No, it will not work. Why would you not want to use the key that came with your new XP Home CD? It would work flawlessly. You are not required to keep on using the key from a prior installation.

i understand that XP OEM keys XP without SP2 do not work for XP with SP2. The only exceptio n is if you had an OEM CD and slipstreamed SP2 into it and made a new CD of the OEM XP. Also a retail purchase XP will not accept an OEM key.

The key for the manufacturers oem that came with the machine will only work for an identical manufacturers oem cd.
Your best bet is to just do a repair install with your new version and use that key. Getting yourself a 3 ring binder and some cd-holder pages and putting all your software CDs in it would be a good way to avoid loosing them.
