My Computer - View not saving

WinXP Home System - have done a re-install / repair install of the OS. Have executred all the Windows Updates. Everything on the PC appears to be running properly except for view settings within the "My Computer"

Each time I open "My Computer" the window initially displays the tool bar on the left side, but then clears it. Then for several seconds, the only thing in the window is an animated flashlight icon that pans back and forth, "illuminating" a file folder every other pass.

When it completes, the icons are displayed with the thumbnail view, even though I have selected and saved the details view several times.

In your folder options, view tab - do you have "remember each folder's view settings" checked?
