Lost Setting Background

I have lost the capability to save pictures in my pictures file as the desktop background, any ideas please on how to get this back. I used to right click on picture and select (Set as desktop background) now nothing happens.

Before you try the following fix, make sure that you're up-to-date with the latest Windows Update Security Patches. Some vulnerabilities have been linked to how Windows handles WMF files ["WMF stands for Windows Metafile Format. This is a graphics file format used to exchange graphics information between Microsoft Windows applications" - Marc Lion on updatexp.com]. I believe patches for most of the WMF vulnerabilities have been issued since their first appearance, but some early workarouds involved disabling the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer - which in turn seems to effect that right-click "Save as Desktop Background" option. The command below re-enables the viewer (if your thumbnails weren't displaying, this should fix that also).

click Start, then Run, then enter the following command:
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

If that doesn't work, there is a longer, three-step process you can try, it's mentioned in this thread at Annoyances.org http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1033599902

And if you are missing any other right-click Display tabs, Kelly's Korner has a registry tweak for restoring the standard options -

Link to the webpage containing this patch and others (the Display Tabs restore patch is on line 285 of this page, on the right hand side) -- http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Best of luck
. . . Gary
