Laptop running XP ends with a BSOD every boot attempt

Hi.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, running Windows XP Home -- SP2. It suddenly crashed with a BSOD for no apparent reason. Since then, whenever I reboot, it will hang at the Windows splash logo screen (for about 15 mins) and will then end with the BSOD.

I've tried rebooting with Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command prompt, Debugging mode, etc., etc. with all ending with the BSOD. I also tried booting with an XP startup diskette (containing boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com) also with no luck. (I think the problem is a corrupted DLL or other system file that's trying to load during the startup.

What I am able to do:

1. I'm able to log onto MS-DOS (using a boot diskette) and used the READNTFS freeware software to confirm that the HDD is still in good shape.
2. By sheer luck, I was able to logon fully one time. I did a successul CHKDSK which reported no errors. I tried a SFC.EXE /SCANNOW which ran about 1/3 thru before blue-screening -- which leads me to think one of the DLL or other system files got corrupted....(which would be strange given XP's supposed system file protection).

Since this laptop comes only with a recovery CD (which would wipe out my data files), I don't have the easy solution of reinstalling XP or doing a repair install.

Any suggestions on how I should proceed? (My options are pretty limited since I can't seem to log onto Windows at all -- except for that one fluke time).

Thanks in advance.
