Angry Installed XP on new C: drive now can't see D: drive

I changed out the OS drive on one of my boxes and installed XP MCE on it. Now it can't seem to find the D: drive (data). I have checked all the jumper settings and cables without any correction.

Thoughts?

Did you have the "D" drive connected during the reinstall?

Strange thing did occur. When switching the jumper on the D: drive there is one setting that keeps windows stalled at the start-up screen and the screen is also darker (not as bright)

not a great idea.

When installing Windows it is better to have the least amount of hardware connected and then install the remaining hardware after Windows is up and running.
Disconnect the undetected drive and reboot Windows, then power down the machine reconnect the drive and see if Windows detects it.

What IDE cable are you using? 40 wire or 80 wire?
How are the jumpers set on the back of the drives?
If you are using 80 wire IDE what colour plug do you have connected to the master hard drive?

okay - I will try the re-boot without the data drive.

IDE cable is 40 wire.
OS is jumpered master (80 Gig Seagate)
Data is jumpered slave - actually no jumper = slave (120 Gig Maxtor)

Well, I removed my ATI card and the second hard drive in order to re-install WinXP MCE. After I installed it and ran all the updates I shut it down. I installed the hard drive. Yet again it could not see it. This is bothersome as the previous OS (W2K) could see it before I decided to change the OS. It finds the ATI video card just fine.

I am going to try and connect the hard drive up to another computer with my USB to IDE connector.

Good idea, at least that way if another machine can see it you can recover your data and then try to install the drive back to the original machine for a format.

I recovered the data with my trusty USB to IDE convertor.

Instresting fact though. I only showed up as have 33 Gig available. Plus, the original machine still cannot see it. Maybe if I reformat it that the desktop will see it. MaxBlast tools lacks so I must dig up my Ultimate boot disk.

Sounds like you set the cylinder limitation jumper. Review the jumper settings again, and make sure you aren't looking at the jumper block backwards.

Talking

Actually, this turned out to be a long drawn out process.

I physically removed the second hard drive, video care, and audio card. Then I reinstalled WinXP MCE. Wouldn't you know it. As I reinstalled the hardware piece by piece XP detected it.

So, thankfully that machine is done. Now back to troubleshooting my daily use computer.
