Dual Boot Problem

Hi all.

When I set up my new PC, I created two partitions on my drive. I then installed two different versions of Windows on each drive. Using the version of Windows I intended to keep, I reformatted the other partition. So now, I only have one version of windows installed, and a second blank partition.

When I boot up, I still get asked to select which OS to load. What's going on, why is it asking me that? I only have one now. How can I configure it so that it just uses the one that is there?

Thanks!

You will need to edit the boot.ini file in the root of your C: drive. Just open it in Notepad, or right-click on My Computer, select Properties, then the Advanced tab, then the Settings button under Startup and Recovery, then the Edit button. Remove the line that refers to the OS that you got rid of. If you aren't sure, then post back here with the full contents of your boot.ini file.

Thanks - that sounded incredibly simple until I couldn't find that file. Doesn't seem to be there. Could it be called anything else?

It's XPPro, and I have hidden files enabled.

Did you try getting to it by going through My Computer?

Ah - I found this.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=289022

Is it safe to do it by hand, or should I use the command prompt as it suggests?

If I remove the wrong OS line, am I stuck for good, or can I get into it and re-edit it?!

I think it's easier to modify by hand. Once you get to it, if you have any doubts just post the contents of the file here and we will tell you what line to take out.
