Switching XP on and off without shutting it down correctly is going to damage it, shut it all down once more and remove the mains cable from the wall socket, wait ten minutes and then plug it back in and start it up again.
What did you unplug instead of the harddrive? |

well i didnt really unplug anythin besides the hard drive and i did shut the computer down correctly. im just wondering if i accidntally told the comp i was going to remover the hard drive so it made it ready to take it out. cuz i stopped the external hard drive and a diff usb mass sstorage device. the computer said it was still hooked up and needed to be removed when i tried to reinstall it. i then removed eveything from the back cept the moniter mouse keyboard and power cable. but the computer said the hardware was still hooked up nd needed to be removed.

In practice hot swapping your 'C' drive is a really bad idea (Windows won't do it which proves that there's some sense in Redmond.). If it's not the 'C' drive and you have it in a removable cage, then yes your SATA drive can become a removable mass storage device though not a usb one. Internal PATA drives are not hot swappable but with the same cage they can be removed from the computer at need and when it's off. Again they're not usb in this instance. An internal drive is not a usb mass storage device. If you want to use a hard drive as a removable usb mass storage device you can either buy an external usb/firewire enclosure for it or you can buy it already in an enclosure. Only in those instances could it be treated as a removable usb mass storage device.

Check all the connections on the back of the machine and then reset the PSU as I told you in the earlier post about unplugging from the wall socket.

I am glad you have got it working again, take some time now to check all your connections and cables, if you haven't had time before maybe a little spring cleaning is in order.
