Ok here goes......
Im running Windows ME on my computer. I turned it on one day and it said that C:/windows/system/vmm32.vxd is missing or corrupted. My windows ME wouldnt load in either normal mode or safe mode. I figured i'd have to reinstall windows so what I did was make a boot disk. I didnt have my windows ME installation disk but was able to finally obtain one.
So next up I put the boot disk in and ran setup from the windows ME installation disc. Problem was it took me to scandisk before running the setup. Scandisk found so many errors it would have taken it forever to finish......so i used the setup /is command in order to skip the scandisk part. My computer went into windows ME installation, however it said some files were crossfiled and I had to run scandisk before it would install. At this point I figured that If i just did format C and wipe everything off the computer, scan disk would run smoother. So first i did format C but that was taking too long so I stopped that and did a quick format instead. It then allowed me to run scandisk and finally the windows ME installation. The installation gets to about 20 mins left and it goes into the windows me startup screen. Then all of a sudden it stops. And then I get a screen saying that im missing vmm32.vxd.......so its like i did all this for nothing. But it gets even worse. I then reboot and now its saying my drive C is not registered and I have a partition problem on FAT or FAT32. I have no idea whats going on. Id just really like the thing to start back up again

What happens if you set the CD drive as first boot device and boot from the ME cd? You don't need a boot disk as the CD is bootable.

All it says is operating system not found.
In BIOS when I set my cd rom drive to the top it does have an exclamation point next to it, im not sure if that means anything. |

Time for two diagnostics. First is the drive manufacturer's since it sounds like your hard drive is probably dying. And if nothing there you follow up with memtest.

To test memory, download the floppy maker from www.memtest.org, to test the hard drive, download diagnostics from the hard drive manufacturer, also a floppy maker.

Should you have any trouble finding the diagnostics for your hard drive manufacturer, there is a helpful list with links to the diagnostics download pages for Maxtor/Quantum, Seagate, IBM/Hitachi, Western Digital, Samsung, and Fujitsu --- http://www.bootdisk.com/dostools.htm
. . . look for the section on that bootdisk.com page "HardDrives" - it's about two-thirds of the way down the page. . . . Gary |

It may be Toshiba, who doesn't have diagnostics. Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test can test all brands, it just can't give you details on anything but IBM or Hitachi drives, it just says pass/fail.

What brand did it say your hard drive is?
Bottom line - you need a new hard drive. |

Its an IBM Travelstar.
Can the hard drive be repaired or is it dead. |

The most cost-effective route is to replace the hard drive -- *if* you are fairly certain the rest of the laptop is sound enough to run for a few more years.
The 40gb Travelstar runs about $65 ($60 for the drive, $5 for shipping) at NewEgg. The replacement procedure is pretty straightforward- let us know if you can't locate the instructions for that, and we'll find you a link. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822146041 If you like to have a little more room than that (for a large music collection, and perhaps a few videos) - The 60gb drives start around $10 more. The $75 Western Digital ($70 for the drive, $5 for shipping) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144375 The $80 Travelstar ($75 for the drive, $5 for shipping) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822146042 ___________________ One last-ditch effort that doesn't cost anything = using the IBM/Hitachi diagnostics tools, try to see if the current drive will allow you a zero-write. It's a low-probability repair, but once and a while a drive can be coaxed to run another year or two this way (it all depends on what sort of trouble the hard drive is having). Best of luck . . .
