WinXP SP2 corrupted.

Ive been having problems trying to get WinXP Service pack 2 installed. I have XP Pro, and i tried downloaded it off the Windows/Microsoft Updater. It won't find the SP2 as a high priority update. And for some reason, i can't get the genuine microsoft update to work. The 2nd option i used to get SP2 was to download the files directly off microsoft. The download was going fine, until when it was extracting files somewhere in the middle it said "File Corrupted". I don't plan on ordering a CD from microsoft (unless it is free). Is there a reason why it is doing this?

My 2nd question that links to this one is, (i haven't done much research), is SP2 really required? I plan to use my computer for designing, studies, and gaming only. Just a quick brief description of it will be fine and why i need it.

Thanks in advance.

Sp2 CD free from microsoft.
As far as the file corrupt message, probably a bad download.
Yes, SP2 is needed. It has a large number of updates to fix major security holes.
