Question Error after a Windows Update: "This copy of Windows is not genuine"

Hi

At office, I did a windows update (Windows Genuine Advantage Tool - Windows XP Professional SP2) today, and when I restarted the PC, i got a small window at logon "This copy of Windows is not genuine". I have been doing windows update over the past few months and have no clue how this came up. This is a licensed version of Windows bought by our company..What do you suggest here?

Thanks for your time,
Ed.

You'll have to contact Miscrosoft to get this sorted out.

Question Reinstallation of "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification" fails

Hi

I contacted the technical assistance team here and they suggested a format of the system! I am not convinced with this, as I have a good volume of data and reloading the apps+data is a real painstaking process. I googled on some websites and removed the Windows Genuine Advantage notification by removing the program folder and few registry keys, so that I can reinstall KB 905474. But reinstallation of KB 905474 fails continuously. Its a genuine copy of windows. Is there any way I can get to install KB 905474.

I am working on some official deliverables, and I am short of time and I need to get this fixed asap. I have included the screenshot as attachment.

I would really appreciate your help in this regard

Thanks,
Ed.

This is the best answer to your problem. A simple phone call to get a new activation number and you should be good to go.

Hi

The required test at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag was run and all the tests have passed. When I run windows update, I still get the same error message. Thanks for your time, but I am still facing the same issue. The Help Desk is keen to format my system, but I am sure that there should be another way out. Please provide your inputs,

Thanks,
Ed.

Very simple. Don't even install that update. It is not essential for *anything*. Next time you run Windows Update, just hide it.

Hi glc,

It is mandatory for us to install all the high-prioroty updates on the PC. Well, I would like to share the solution that has been provided to me by Microsoft. I am sure that this solution will be of benefit to persons who are facing the same issue.

I'm really glad that the solution worked :-)

Here we go ->

We need to register system components. Some system files may not be registered properly. The following command will re-register these files so they will be recognized by the computer.

1. Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose Yes when you are prompted.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window.

regsvr32 Inseng.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Ole32.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml2.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
net stop wuauserv
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution oldSD
net start wuauserv

3. After you paste the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.
4. Click Start, Run, type: C:\register.bat and press Enter to run the commands we have pasted.

** No hassles, and the problem is gone!

with regards,
Ed.

There is a hotfix for it here that will let you manually download and install the WGA. It stops you from having to go into your registry and from having to deal with the problems that arise because of windows update not recognizing the download.

Hi Ray

Thats a really good link, Thanks

Well, I wrote to Microsoft since the manual install of KB905474 did not assist me in resolving the issue.

My PC works fine now. Thanks to all folks for their suggestions!

Regards,
Ed.
