Where is the My Network Places info saved?
Hi all,
So for network drive mapping, the drives are saved in NTUSERS.DAT. This way, if i migrate a PC, i just need to look at the .DAT file to find out the mapping. However, the Network Places in the My Network Places are not stored in the same place. Does anyone know what file/where the folders/drives saved in the My Network Places are stored so that I can easily migrate from one PC to another? thanks |

I think the information you're looking for is in the hidden folder "Nethood" in the user profiles (C:\Document and Settings\user-name\Nethood)

That's just a shortcut in there, pointing to files elsewhere on the drive.

Hi Randomaxess
Since "My Network Places" are usually shortcuts to folders located on PCs other than the one you are migrating, I would guess you'd be OK by copying the shortcuts. You could also try the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" built into Windows XP. By default, it's location is in Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools. Here's a little excerpt from an early description of that tool from Microsoft --- "Items migrated by default include: Internet Explorer settings, Outlook Express settings, store Outlook settings, store dial-up connections, phone and modem options, accessibility, classic desktop (optional) screen saver settings, fonts, folder options, taskbar settings, mouse and keyboard settings, sounds settings, regional options, office settings, network drives and printers desktop folder, my documents folder, my pictures folder, favorites folder, cookies folder, common office file types." I haven't had to use the Wizard myself - but it's use is fairly common & it seems to get fair reviews. Best of luck . . . Gary |
