"safely remove hardware" icon missing
on my parent's computer (amd duron 650MHz, running xp pro sp2) the "safely remove hardware" icon does not appear in the system tray when they connect their mp3 player (sandisk sansa e260) so they can't safely unplug it.
what's going on and how do i fix this?

yup.
when i connect it to the computer, a little icon in the shape of a player appears for a couple of minutes in the system tray, along with a "dong ding" sound and then i can transfer files to it (via raphsody) but there is no "safely remove hardware" icon. |

If it shows in My Computer, right click on it and select Eject. That will clear it for removal. I use that method for removing cards from by Card Reader. Using the Safely Remove icon disconnects the entire usb card reader and I have to reboot to get it back.

See if this will work, right-click the System Tray and select Properties. Under the Notification Area select Customize, find the Safely Remove Hardware icon click on it. The pull down menu will offer some choices select "Always Show" or "Hide when Inactive" so it will appear in the System Tray.

OK I've got one more suggestion, right-click on your drive choose Properties>Hardware highlight your drive. Click Properties>Policies Tab click Optimize for Performance, click OK and Apply. Then reboot your computer you should see the Safely Remove Hardware icon in System Tray. If this doesn't work I'm fresh out of ideas hope someone else can help.
