install new hd to replace old hd
Using win 98 boot up diskete, i have disconnect my old hd and connect the new maxtor 30gb hd to primary master. Fdisk shows 28630mb total free space.
i used f disk and create C: (10gb) and set it to active partition. i create extended dos (20gb). then i create logical drive D: (10gb) e: (8000mb)and f: (630mb). at a: i format c: and d:. but i cant' access e: nor f:. it said "invalid disk drive specification". My old hd configuration is c: d: e: with cdrom at f:. Then, i connect back my old hd as primary master and new hd as primary slave. cd rom at secondary master. win98 boot up, i saw my new hd as D: only while c: e: f: belongs to old hhd. what happen to other logical drives of my new hd? I notice when i bootup from start up diskette, setram=e: appears. from a:, i accessed e: and type "dir". it has 2 gb free space but no files in it. it even has its own volume label. what should i do? |

Unplug your OLD HD then plug in the NEW Drive as Primary master - boot with either Win98 cdrom or floppy type Fdisk select Number 4 to view the partitions how many you get there? Are those partitions properly formatted?
Setram=E means this is a Ramdrive..to place temporary files for Setup - I just wonder why it would create a ramdrive of 2Gb??Because it shouldn't be anything more than max 4 Mb.

The actual size is 2mb, i might have see it wrongly. Anyway, the problem is my mobo doesn’t recognise hd over 20 gb. Any partition over that limit will be discarded. Somehow, i changed the auto to lba mode and everything is working now.
