Vista vs. MCE

I heard that Vista will have a version of MCE (similar features) built into one of its packages. When this comes out, how long do you guys think it will be until Microsoft discontinues updating MCE 2005?

Thanks Ezy. That link is very useful, but it doesn't seem to let me view other OS's other than the one I'm currently running.

You can probably figure that Microsoft won't have a shorter support cycle for MCE than for the last few versions of Windows 9x and Windows NT/2000/XP. So you should be pretty assured that the update support should last five years or more, at a minimum.

The active support for Windows 98 is just now phasing out (summer 2006) - that's eight years of constant support - not bad. Even after the active support is discontinued, the old patches remain downloadable from the Microsoft websites (I was able to run Windows Update on an old Windows 95 machine as recently as two years ago - haven't tried lately). Even some old DOS utilities can still be downloaded, if you look long enough.

Best of luck

Kind of an exception is any verison of XP SP1 the support will end Oct 10, 2006...

SP2-> "Support ends either 12 months after the next service pack releases or at the end of the product's support lifecycle, whichever comes first."

There's going to be an SP3 for XP after Vista gets releasee.

SP3 for Windows XP Home Edition is currently planned for 2H 2007. This date is preliminary.
Add 5 years and that takes you to at least the second half of 2012.
