When did you first notice it missing? and have you tried a system restore to a date before that?

I've seen this once before and it was Spyware related. Have you run Adaware and Spybot recently? Take a trip over to Ewido.net and do an online scan if you have high speed internet. If you don't, download and install Ewido, update it and scan.

Thanks, found a whole load of spyware and got it all cleaned out but still no "run" in my start menu.
I've also noticed that when I clicked start I only have the option to log off where as before I could close or restart etc directly from there so I dont know if these are related. It may appear that I am not up to speed regarding my PC but it is usually switched on 24/7 so I cant say when this log off thing started.

What happens when you hold the Windows key down and hit R on the keyboard?

"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact system administrator"

Did you expect that. I didnt know you could call up the registry this way but when I read your reply I thought somthing like this would happen.
I'm stumped.

See if this helps. It's not specific to the run command but if you look at the example at the end I think the solution will be evident.

Jiroma it seems all bases have been covered but I didn't see anyone mention this fix. It was taken from www.kellys-korner.com I hope it helps.

Run Command - Restore

The Registry branch for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder is damaged or corrupted. Fix: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/folder_reg.zip To use: Download the ZIP file and open it. Extract the REG file and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking them and selecting Edit.

We have a fix of sorts. i deleted my user account and logged on as administrator and all was back to normal. I'm not sure if the patches I tried worked or not but nothing seemed to while my own user account was active. Thanks all for your help.
