file transfer wizard

Hi. I hope I am in the correct forum. I have been trying to transfer files from my emachine(which has windows xp) to my dell computer(os windows xp) for three days. I went to Staples and brought null modem parrell cables to connect to both computers. I hooked the cables to each computer via the serial ports. I started the transfer with the file transfer wizard. Unfortunately it does not work. It claims that it cannot find the other computer.
I checked the cable connections, which are secure. I read all the documentations con-
cerning the direct cable transfer and I believe I am doing something wrong. I cannot create a wizard disk because the emachine doesn't have a floppy disk drive. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Can someone please help me with this problem. I have emailing the files to myself, but I can't open it. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you. maryhigginsrice.

It's a lot easier and faster if you connect them together with a crossover style Ethernet cable. It will take you days to get files across via serial.

Better yet, if all you want is files, is remove the hard drive from the old machine and install it in the new machine as an additional drive. You could also use a external USB housing or adapter if you don't want to open up the new machine.
