Need help.big problem

Hi, I'm new to this forum so what better way to get to know you guys. I'm working on my inlaws computer, it is windows XP Pro and it has been fine ever since she got it. Then she let her Norton run out and now it pops up and says that the windows is not genuine. It was before I know for a fact. She did get a bunch of viruses. On startup it used to say XP pro and now it just says XP. Also why is the icons on the desktop highlighted? I have all the viruses off now. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Here is another thread discussing the genuine validation problem: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=159487

After solving that, you may need to do a repair of windows to solve the other problems, a virus can do alot of damage to windows files sometimes.

You have an illegal copy of Windows, plain and simple. Support your local economy and buy Windows XP :P

I don't see anything that PROVES that. There's been a lot of problems lately with genuine copies doing this kind of stuff. Let's not be so quick with the accusations.

It is completely LEGAL! It was purchaced from a store about 1 1-2 years ago. Everything was good till she let the Norton expire and then it was infected BAD. That is what I don't understand because I know for a FACT that it is legal.
