Annoying update problem
Ever since the last time I updated from the Microsoft Automatic Updates website, I've had an annoying problem. I'm on dialup internet and I don't leave my computer on, so needless to say, my internet connection is not always on. Now every time I boot up (cold boot), the desktop loads normally, but at the end a popup box comes up that says "You have requested information from go.microsoft.com.....which connection would you like to use?". I've looked in the Automatic Updates settings and can't seem to find anything to turn this dang popup box off (short of totally turning AU off, which I don't want to do.....I have it set to "notify me of updates and I'll DL them"). Nothing wrong (that I can see anyway) with my Startup folder either. Anybody else have this problem or know what to do to turn it off like it was before the last update?

Nothing out of the ordinary, that I can see anyway. Most everything is having to do with other programs like Nero, Avast antivirus, Logitech (for my mouse), my sound card launch program, a couple entries for ATI for my video card......not much for Microsoft except one line that has to do with my Microsoft keyboard, and I figure that's just loading the setup program for the keyboard. Only other line I couldn't directly identify was one that was left blank on the description.....all it has is a registry location, so I went in the registry to see what it was and it links back to the Steam program that's used for the game Half-Life 2.

That might be the latest "genuine advantage" update calling home.
I saw an article somewhere (can't remember where at the moment, will post it if I do) that said it does that at every startup. It said that they were going to change it to every 14 days on the next version.

That's a possibility, because it started doing this after it notified me there was an update ready for my computer.....but it wasn't the normal "second Tuesday of the month" update.....this was like, I dunno, a week ago maybe. I know when it scanned my machine, it said I didn't have the latest file checker version and it downloaded a new version of that, so it's quite possible that "genuine advantage" thing might be trying to call home or something. Hopefully they'll change it like you said, so it's not an every time you boot sort of thing. Thanks for that comment.

Yeah, that is what the off schedule update was.
Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) and Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) .
