Cannot boot XP after Vista install
I have a P IV with 2 HDs. On C: is my old XP Pro. I installed XP Pro on the a new HD, which is now D:
I just recently installed Vista on C:, after formatting. I thought that I would get a dual boot option, like I had before, BUT, noooo. Now I cannot boot XP. I have tried using the boot menu and directing to D:, but Vista loads. I tried booting from the CD ROM with the XP disc, and I get as far as the beginning of instalation, then it asks for the original XP disc. I do not have an upgrade CD. I used the same cd to install XP on the new HD. I am at a loss. It appears that I have somehow damaged boot.ini or some other boot process. Any advice? Do I need to start over and format the HDs, install XP on C: and then Vista on D:? |

the problem sounds as tho it is that you formated C: when i did the vista install i told it to contiue with the currently installed OS(2000 pro in my case) and what it did was copy everything into a new folder on C: called Windows.old that allows me to select to boot to 2000 instead of vista if i want. your best bet in this case may be to uninstall everything off of C: use d to store all of you files, then install XP then VISTA onto C: merge you important files off of d: and then to C: so you can get rid of The windows install on the d: drive(no need for it there)
instead of formatting drive d: you could also just delete the folder where windows is stored but its your choice

You should have left XP on C and installed Vista on D. Now you have to repair reinstall XP, and I'm betting that this will knock out Vista.
