Question My PC will not go to the desk top screen (help please)

On my PC I have XP pro
My computer has been working great untill yesterday. I turned if off, when I turned it back on. The XP PRO screen comes up, then the screen comes up with all the safe modes, last known good config, and start norm. then it starts over to the XP PRO screen. It will not go to the Desk to or screen with my Icons
I have tried turning conputer off all night, pressing all the safe mode buttons, control-alt-del nothing helps.
Thank you for any help to get started again

If this came out of nowhere download the diagnostic for your hard drive from the manufacturer's site and follow the instructions for running it. If the drive shows bad sectors then get your data off of it and rma it if it's still under warranty.

If the drive is sound then dig out your XP cd and follow the instruction for a repair install : http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=151522
This will only work if you have a 'real' copy of XP though.

If you have an OEM machine and a 'restore' cd or a restore partition the first part is still what you do though you''d get the diagnostic from the OEM's site (that's Dell, etc.).
What you may not be able to do is repair the install which would mean that you'd still have to get your data off that drive, even though it's otherwise okay, before you use the restore function which will format and reinstall XP.
