Unable to turn on firewall. check box is greyed out

Hello. I'm running Xp HOME I had a trojan virus that went after my security settings. I believe I got everything cleaned up but I cannot get the firewall to turn on, the check box is greyed out. Symantic had a registry fix for this but after doing so I still do not have control of the firewall. It has a banner across the top of the settings saying it "For security reasons, some settings are controlled by group policy" as far as what I read xp home does not have group policy settings. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

You will need to do some registry editing (START > RUN > regedit)
Check if any of these keys exist and if they do, make sure that the values are as listed:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\ and delete the entire key.

Statica you are the man!!!!!!! unless of course you're a woman (then you're a great woman at that). That did the trick. Now I can have a great fathers day. this was bugging me for days, somehow my daughter opened a link from an IM and the next thing you know all my secutity settings were disabled. I thought I was on my way to a reinstall.
I really appreciate the expertise. Have a great day, Tom
Ps is there a program that can check the "correct settings" for the entire registry??
Thanks again

well maybe it isn't fixed just yet. seems that when I ran spybot one more time all the window security Center problems came back. However all the settings have not been changed. I still have my auto updates, firewall, etc. seemingly working

What do I do now??

Again I'm running Xp home edition, I have 2 hard drives with the first drive being my C drive plus an extended partition (X drive) that has my documents. My second hard drive has 2 partitions (G and H) and that holds my Microsoft backup utility "back up. Would it be wise to use my backup and if I should how would I go about it?? or could I just do a repair of my C drive. What to do What to do
thanks

What virus do you have? Did you run a check through http://housecall.antivirus.com/ to see what your computer is infected with.

it's the W32.Dopbot I ran spybot which says it fixed it again, the computer shows no problems. I'm running Panda now and will get back to you. Housecall site is down right now for service. Thanks

Have you turned off system restore? It could be reinstalling it's self from there.

Yes I have sys restore turned off but don't remember if I did it before or after spybot cleaned the problems the first time. I just ran housecall and it came up clean. Everything seems to be operating ok for now. Will run spybot again. Thanks

Before you FIX anything with Spybot, analyze what it finds.

If you want a good online scan, try the freebie at www.ewido.net.
