User Accounts and documents in XP
Hi, I have questions about setting up user accounts on XP Home. I have done one, but basically want to know how to know what files they can access, what harm they could do to the computer or my files, etc. I have looked around and see that they can surf. I am presuming printer/scanners/antivirus and such are used across the board.
How do I know which files of mine are protected? When searching I see a bunch, but the computer freezes when I try to open them. Also, is there a way to set up an account for someone to make the neccessary settings and such to set up the computer for DSL (across the board perhaps) yet still limit their access to my files? Would this be by setting up a password protected administrator? Would their powers be equal to mine? If I want to limit DSL on certain user accounts, is that doable? I know I asked a lot of questions. I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Terry Last edited by quartet-man; 06-22-2006 at 04:12 PM. |

If you make a new account as a guest account they only have permission for the most basic things such as internet access, e-mail, and their own documents folder

whoever is the administrator has all the rights to see everything on the PC. You can see what the limited(guest) account can see when you make the account. There is a description when you are creating it

Thanks. I wish there were a way that administrators could have private files too, or an middle step with some powers, but still controlled by the main person.

For the granularity you want, you should be using XP Pro.

I wish I had gotten it now. However, it was a pretty high end machine and I cannot get another one for a long time. I presume even upgrading would be fairly pricey.

you can get a XP PRO upgrade for 200 bucks but a whole new XP PRO SP2 for about 140 bucks. I don't know why the upgrade would be more expensive though.

I saw that, but have found some cheaper on eBay. Are there different versions of the upgrade (besides service packs?) I want to get the most current if possible.

SP2 is the most current but do you really trust eBay? If you do then go for it. There are different version like media center . Go to newegg (just to check) and they have all the versions there but I don't know if there are more then that

eBay is great on some things. Software can be one of them under the right circumstances. I have already checked at newegg, and will look further if I want to do it. Thanks.
