Protected Files
This goes along with my user question, but I started a new thread since it is another question.
In Windows XP, I see that only certain folders are protected. I want to protect all of a secondary drive, and possibly other folders on the primary drive. I saw the place to check mark, but it will not let me, nor will it when I make a new folder. Is there a way to do this? Thanks, Terry |

Are you sure you're trying under the administrator account?

Yeah, it is the first account I set up when I got the computer. It is also the one I used to set up the other accounts. Both drives also use NTFS. Maybe I am doing it wrong. As I recall, I right click, go the the sharing tab and it says to check this box if you want to protect content. It also says that putting it in the shared folders would allow others to use it.
It is the home version of XP even though it is a small business (church). I have tons of files on there with some personnel (and personal ) info and such. Even though my office is locked most of the time, I am wanting to set it up for someone who needs access to it sometimes, but want to keep my stuff private.I've also wondered how protected files are handled if someone were use the drive(s) as slaves in another system. Would a password or something be required to access them? Last edited by quartet-man; 06-23-2006 at 10:36 AM. |

You do this through the security tab on the properties.
Basically set the top level folder to have the security settings you want and the sub-files and folders will inherit those permissions. From the sound of it, you would probably want to remove the "Users" group from full access and explictly assigne the user account(s) you want to have access. |

I am pretty sure that is what I tried. Is it because I am using Home instead of Pro?

XP Home doesn't have many security features like XP PRO has.

You may have to change the option for advanced folder views in Explorer under Tools > Folder Options. |

. I just wanted to say that most likely everything he probably wants to do will only be available (in full) on XP PRO.

The only notable difference XP Pro offers over XP Home is the ability to join a workstation to a domain (which it doesn't sound like he wants to do) and the ability to install additional services, such as IIS.
XP Home would work for what quartet is looking for, but I agree with you Ghost, its best to have XP Pro in case you do need to use these features. |

We are about to have DSL and network, so I want to protect files for that reason as well. I will check when I am there next time and see if what has been mentioned works. Thanks.

I still cannot get it to work. Same thing as before. Under the sharing tab of properties the checkbox and text next to it not being fully viewable. (Not hidden, but less strong.) Does it have something to do with what it says underneath? Under network sharing it says As a security measure Windows has disabled remote access to this computer.
Also, I haven't installed SP 2 or some updates. Dialup takes far too long on this until DSL is going and I had trouble trying to find SP2 at home to download to bring in. I did find a version once and it messed up the computer somehow, so I think I went back to a safepoint before it. |
