WinXP as file server .. but it's showing strange behaviour ...

Hy guys ..
I'm having a very weird problem here..
I have a old PIII 550 with Win XP PRO that i plan to use as a file server .... just to leave it running .. and get the files there .. with my notebook
I use a router, a WRT54g, that connects to the internet .. and get both computers working.
They both see each other .. and i see the drives i shared on the PIII ..
I have set the exception on the windows XP firewall, I have set the permissions to Everybody / can do everything in the drive..
But ... what happens ...is that I can access the drive ... browse the files ....
I can do everything ... but i can't watch the movies ..
I have several mpg's in the directory ...
The weird thing .. is that I can watch some files . (the older ones .. older than the DAY i set up the network), then ... the new files i've downloaded. .. i can't access... my WMPlayer says that i have the wrong configuration .. check proxy setting .. .. that stuff..
I don't know if I have some problem with accessing new files .... I just can't think of what i'm doing wrog ...
Another thing .. is that I can't copy those files either ..from the PIII ... BUT !!! If i sit on the PIII, and get the file.. and put it in my notebook shared folder ... it goes ok ...
Anyone has ANY IDEA to help me ????
Thank you very much for your time .....

streaming MPEGs over a 54Mbps connection isn't a good idea IMO, don't you agree?

the fact that you can't copy could be due to permission settings.

The best thing to do is to opy the files over to the notebook, then play them.

I don't use a 54Mb connection ... when i'm at home .. most of the time .. i use the 100MB connection to get the notebook connected ...
I'll take a lot of time to copy the files .. and then play them ... and .. the files that I CAN play .. they do just fine ..
Can anyone help me .. on telling me how to create a user for my notebook on the desktop .. and then ... gettin it to access the files ??
Sometimes .. it ask's me for a user on the desktop .... i put anything ..and it goes on ..
The permissions i've set for the users on the desktop is that "Everyone" can access the files. .. but it doesn't seems to work ...........................
Tnks for any help

Enable simple file sharing on the XP Pro desktop and see if that helps. That's in folder options, view, bottom item. You may also want to enable the Guest account. There is also a group policy item that can prevent users with blank passwords from accessing over the network - this can be disabled.
