how to use system restore

How do we use system restore when windows xp gets corrupted?
For example I have choosed a perticular space from the max space available for system restore
for D: . Then in case if my windowsxp gets corrupted ,then how do I make system restore active?

start-all programs-accessories-system tools-system restore-check "restore my computer to an earlier date-hit next- ckick on a date in bold face-click on the point you want if there is more than 1 for that date-next-sit back and wait a few minutes while it runs and restarts the machine-it tells you if it was successfull-exit-done
