Some questions about Win98 Installation on a System with WinXP

We have to generally install the older version 1st if we want to have multiple windows os in a system. I was reading an article on pcmech.com about "how to install win98 on a system which already has winxp in C:".

It said that if C: has NTFS partition, then you cannot install win98 on it and need a 3rd party software to change the partition to FAT32. And if the C: has FAT32, then we can install win98 in D: with the help of win98 boot disk.

The method for installing win98 in this situation is given below:

Installing Windows® 98

1) Use a Win98/Me Startup disk (with CD support) to boot your computer.

2) Insert your Win98/Me CD into the CD Rom drive.

3) At the A: prompt type X:\Win98\Setup.exe (for Win98) or X:\Win9x\Setup.exe (for Win Me) where X: is your CD-ROM drive.

4) Proceed with the install. When prompted for the install location, you'll see C:\Windows.000. Choose Other directory and change this to the drive you wish to install 98/Me to and name the folder Windows (or something else if you prefer).

5) Complete the Win98/Me install. Allow the computer to boot into Win98/Me.

I didnot understand point 1) , how can we boot the system with CD support if we use win98 startup floppy disk?

A Win98 startup floppy will boot to a menu with 3 choices - start computer with CD support, start computer without CD support, and set up Windows 98.

Just curious - did you even try to boot a computer with a Win98 startup disk before you posted this question?

Not a silly question, but you could have tried it before posting - you learn better by trying, not just asking and letting others lead you by the hand.

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually I try after reading stuff not otherway around. I think it is a more appropriate that we 1st understand the material clearly before jumping into practical work.

when you make the w98 start-up floppy, look at the files that are on the disk, you will see a readme txt file which is a full set of instructions that you can print out on how to use the disk and the files it creates when used.
