navigating DOS help
Ok, I have a file that will not delete because of course some other unknown program is using it. Well I want to try shutting down explorer and deleting the file in DOS but there is a problem. I obviously have no clue in DOS because I can't even Locate a directory let alone a file.
The file is in D:\Program Files\ Im wondering if someone can tell me the exactline I need to type to navigate to this file so I can just paste it in there. Ive tried find D:\, find D, find [D:] etc. and all sorts of combinations and get nowhere........... |

You could use Move on Boot to delet the file on the next reboot, see if that works.

If MoveOnBoot won't delete it, boot with the Windows CD and use the repair console to delete it using DOS commands.

Assuming you are booting with a DOS bootable floppy disc, the system will boot to the command prompt of A drive which is a:\>
Type these and press enter after each line: cd d: cd progra~1 Finally type del *******.*** to del the file you want to get rid of. |

A DOS bootable floppy disk cannot access a NTFS partition which is most likely the case here with WinXP. Hence my recommendation to use the XP CD.

I tried it from the repair console and it tells me access is denied to Program Files. It let me in the windows folder but I tried another folder I had on the disk and it tells me access is denied to that also. This is all after I logged in with my admin password?????????? Just incase Ive already tried to delete it from safemode and its still in use. Why is access denied?
P.S. Sorry for the new thread, I was just trying to get it in the right section. Radio Edit: Ok I just found somewhere that I only have access to the windows folder from the repair console. Last edited by Bud Light; 07-05-2006 at 02:08 PM. |

EMCO UnLock IT allows you to terminate the process that is locking a file. This can be useful if you are trying to delete or manipulate a file that is in use by some other application. EMCO UnLock IT will show details for the process that is locking the file, and offer you to terminate it.

Try using attrib first to remove any attributes like hidden, read-only, system files.
attrib -S -H -R and then delete it.

Have you tried logging in as administrator and taking ownership of the file?

Well I checked in to that an im pretty sure I already had ownership but If not I do now and I still cant delete it. GLC, Were you telling me to do that because I said I didn't have access to the file? Because that was just because I was at the recovery console which only allows me to access the windows folder. Is there a way I can get the Dos command prompt up before windows starts?
Also here is my exact boot.ini file [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect The 64 bit editions contents have been completely removed and is completly uneeded or used so I f I just delete that sentance or (string maybe) will It still boot fine without the choice to boot in 64 bit? [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect like that Last edited by Bud Light; 07-05-2006 at 08:09 PM. |

You need to log in as "Administrator" and take ownership - and grant full control to Everyone. This still won't help you in the console, but it may allow MoveOnBoot to do its thing.
You can remove the boot choice screen in control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery. |

Took ownership and still nothing. I can't believe this. Why couldn't dos be included with xp so I can delete this piece of crap there.
Also the folder that tlhis file is in is read only. When I click the box to undue this and hit ok it just sets it right back to read only. The file however is not read only. |

You stated ->bannedfromtv.mdf and its in the folder bannedfromtv This almost sounds like something a parent would install? Any idea where the file came from? |

No more bannedfromtv.mdf
I had downloaded a trial version of alcohol 120 to view my mdf files and used it for this and forgot about it. Because of this I made sure that alcohol 120 was not running when I was trying to delete the file. After wondering how in the world this file would not delete I opened up alcohol 120 just to check it out and it let me know that my trial period had expired. So I uninstalled alcohol and it asked if I wanted to remove settings for alcohol in the registry also so I did and then deleted the file no problem. I don't know if this somehow locked the file to prevent me from using the program but I had previously checked all teh running process and made sure no alcohol was running. I even deleted everyprocess I could and when it told me the computer would shut down in a minute because I ended crytical processess I just kept ending tasks and trying to delete the file.Either way your help is much appreciated |
