HELP please-xp crash

I just reformatted this a month ago and do not feel like doing it again.
I'll keep it short.
When I boot I get this message:
AUTOCHK program not found. Skipping autocheck.
Then it goes back to the boot screen, I am dual booting with Vista.
What is AUTOCHK, and how do I get it fixed or past it.
I have yet to try a repair with xp disk. I wanted to find out what it was first.
Thanks
B

That's the precursor to CHKDSK. Your hard drive has errors and you need to run CHKDSK in one of the Fix modes.

Why are you using a beta operating system when you don't want to reformat? If you want to play that game, you have to accept these things.

well, the beta is on the other partiton, which i expected to have trouble with.
i used a tool called PTedit to fix the atochk problem. A lot of ppl seem to be having the same trouble. Weather true or not, some ppl are blaming a windows hot fix--Windows XP HotFix: KB824105.

I guess everyone is different, everytime I get in a jam, I don't look to reformating as the only fix.
or that is all I'd be doing. the partiton was hidden, and all I had to do was select the appropriate partition type. Much faster then formating. But eh, I'm the one asking for help, not giving it.
