Re-installing XP
A guy dropped his computer off for me to "fix". It was so loaded with virus that I had to re-install XP. I tried 3 times, got corrupted file messages. I zero filled the harddrive and re-installed,same thing. I disconnected the second(backup) hard drive and so far it is working OK. Can a second hard drive corrupt the installation on the C drive?

Heck yes - don't reconnect the backup drive till AFTER Windows is installed.

XP seems to be running OK now. If I re-connect it and it has virus, can it do harm before I scan it with AVG ?
Thanks trulad |

I have had a few instances of avg not finding a virus. I would load avast on the system then set it to do a boot time virus scan of all drives [before windows loads] Shutdown and now connect the backup drive. Restart and avast will scan the drive before any os loads. It is a pretty neat feature.

Thanks. I was able to pull his files off the D drive to a CD. I am now re-formatting the D drive. Hopefully this will cure the problem.
