Setting Windows Login to look like Windows 2000?
I would like to set up my laptop to have its login screen different from that of the default XP style, as I would prefer not to have my username broadcast to whoever reads my computer screen.
Is there a particular way I can do that, or a service to disable? Thanks, Kareeser |

To get the login box again, you need to disable the welcome screen. In XP Pro you go into the control panel, user accounts, change the way a user logs in or off, uncheck "use welcome screen".
That will give you the login box. At least in XP Pro (dunno about XP home). Now to remove the XP style from it, you need to enter the registry, and set ThemeActive to 0 in both the following locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager That'll give you the login as it was in Win2K. XP Home, glc
![]() I think I tried deactivating the Theme Manager (a week ago), and it turned my entire desktop into a Windows 2000 lookalike... although I'll try your suggestions, thanks ![]() Edit: Worked like a charm... I only wanted the Login box instead of the screen. Last edited by Kareeser; 07-09-2006 at 12:42 PM. |
