Multiple Boot/Install problems with Vista
Alright, so I recently bought a brand new 160 GB HDD and installed it (SATA) and formatted in XP Professional, tested everything out, moved files, copied things, etc. So I decided to try and install the Vista Beta 2, Consumer Preview Program, using the 2 disks I bought from Microsoft (the set that comes with both the 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista). I installed them on one computer and it was successful.
When I try to install it on this computer, I go through all the install steps, copy the files, expand them, etc, and then the computer restarts, like it should, but in the OS selection menu, after I choose the Vista installation, it just goes to a blank screen. Does Vista not like SATA HDD's? I could unsdertand a Raid Set, but this is just a Basic disk formatted NTFS. Now, after about 2 days of fooling with it, trying to reformat the disk and try again, I now have 4 options on the Boot menu: my XP Professional, and 3 copies of Vsta, none of which work of course becuase there are no Vista files there. How can I minimize the number of OS selections on there? This is what I've tried: I have tried to manually edit the C:/boot.ini file this is what I see: Code:
; ;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems. ;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options. ; [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN I've tried everything I can and have searched long and hard, but nothing has fixed my Bootup problems. Please help!! |

Of course only minutes after I post this I find the answer. To anyone who may have this problem in the future:
http://www.desktoppipeline.com/handson/175803154 Basically to sum it up, Vista uses a new Boot execution system contained in C:/Boot, and if there is no Vista, it is "safe" to delete this folder copmletely, or rename it, just to be safe. So ta da! Just thought I'd update in case anyone else has this problem! Now to get Vista to install correctly... |

you have to create a partition to put vista on...at least 50gigs it prefers...then.. you still need to supply the sata drivers during the install..like you do with XP (F6 during loading)...if you cant do it in vista..do it from the xp cd...there is a tutorial floating around as how to do it correctly...
