XP Pro hangs on shutdown screen
My laptop with XP Pro SP2 hangs on the "windows is shuting down" screen when I try to restart. The shutdown is normal when I select shutdown. It will restart normally in safe mode. This problem started when I decided to upgrade Acrobat from version 7.0 to 7.08. The upgrade went fine until it got to the restart your computer part and that's when it hung the first time. I have removed acrobat from my computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hank |

This could be due to a WGA update -- I've heard of it happening to other people.

Microsoft has always accepted my Best Buy bought copy of XP Pro. I don't think it's that. I ran a registry repair software and fixed 3 medium problems and 151 minor problems. Now, according to the registry software, I don't have any problems with the registry. I still have the restart problem. The fix will be exactly what I thought when it happened; a format/reinstall of XP. What a pain!! At least this time I have good back-ups, I think.
Thanks for all the help anyway. Hank |

Have you tried a system restore?

Yes, a system restore was the first thing I tried. And what's more, I've never been able to do a system restore. I follow instructions but it just doesn't' work for me. Before I format and reinstall I'll try a system restore in safe mode. I'm not going to reinstall XP for a few days 'cause the computer is working fine except for the restart feature.
Would love to hear any other suggestions you might have. Hank |

WGA can still break the computer, even if it validates your copy of Windows as genuine. In the cases I heard, WGA validated the installs, but they still hung at the shutdown screen. Uninstalling the update (or doing a system restore; I don't remember which) fixed the problem.

Ok thefultonhow, Just so I leave no stone unturned, I'll remove WGA before I undertake the XP re-install. I'll let you know if it helps...
I've already removed Acrobat. Hank |

I found the source of my restart problem! Updating Adobe Acrobat had nothing to do with it.
I connect to the internet, at home, through a Linksy Wireless Router connected to my cable broadband. I use a Wireless Lan PC Card in one of the two PCMCIA slots in my laptop. The last time I plugged the Lan Card in my computer, I used the top PCMCIA slot. Usually, almost always, I use the bottom slot. The top slot is the problem. When I switch the Lan Card to the bottom slot the restart function works perfectly. Why is this? As far as I can tell the drivers are identical in every way. The problem is not something that must be fixed and I won’t format and reinstall for this. Besides, I don’t think it would fix the problem anyway. I am curious as to why the restart function works in one slot and not the other. Shutdown works normally with the Lan Card in either slot. Come on GLC, throw something out and thanks for the URL in your first post. I had Googled that page before your post, read it again after your post and re-read it again last night and the fifth paragraph from the bottom mentions the 802.1x authentication issue. That made me check my Lan Card, finally. Hank |
