Xp Wont Boot From Cd

Hey im trying to do a windows repair but the problem is my computer wont let me boot from CD. The problem is I am getting the message 'Could not load i386\halaacpi.dll'. Even if I try installing while running windows it still has the same message. The windows XP home addition CD i am using is genuine. Anyone have any clue to whats wrong?

IF YOU CAN HELP ME PLEASE EMAIL ME ADVICE TO chevymck@westnet.com.au it would be much appreciated.

Have you changed the boot order in the BIOS to boot from CD first?

Thats not the problem it says press any button to boot from CD anyways... its once i have pressed that it starts loading up a few things then that error message occurs... its like my CD doesnt have all the files it needs or something... has me confused... how can it not find the file i386\halaacpi.dll and my CD is a genuine.

The machine is usable... i jsut want to run a repair because i have had a bad run in with spyware and adware and i think i may have stuffed a few things up in registry during removal process. My computer just wont re-install XP because it cant find that file and it wont boot from CD because it cant find that file...

Have you tried a search of the CD to see if that file exists?
Try the microsoft data base to find out what that file is.

Are you trying the recovery console or the install/repair option?

What have you got plugged into the machine in the way of printers and USB devices?

You should unplug it, you don't want anything extra plugged in to the machine when doing this.
When you do the repair install are you agreeing to the full install and format of the harddrive? during this operation Windows does a compatibilty check and finds your existing XP installation and then gives you the option to repair it.

mmm yeh true but i dont think it is the source of my current problem... I was under the assumption u could do a repair without reformating the hard drive

You can, when you select format and install XP, Windows will do a compatibility check and check your harddrive, during this process it will find your existing installation of XP and give you the option to repair the existing installation.

Have a read of this thread by Gary Routh, http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=151522 and unplug that printer and try again.
Are you using a copy of your original CD or is this an OEM CD? http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=838856

You may have a dodgy ram stick - you might want to run memtest86+.

You download it, make the floppy disk or CD, and boot with it.
