bizzare crash diagnosis?

Hi, didn't know exactly where to post this, hope it works...

I was playing a game a few days ago and my comp froze, so I shut down (nothing else worked). When I tried to restart, the HD light stayed on, but I got a 'Check Signal Cable' message on the monitor (default when it isn't getting anything from the computer). I waited for over half an hour but nothing happened. Shut down again and tried to restart, nothing. Tried to start from a boot disk or my disk image recovery cd, nothing. HD light on solid, no signal to monitor. Just a few minutes ago I turned it on again just to check before opening it up to look for charred wires or something and it started up fine!
So my question is, are there any diagnostics I can run to find out what may have happened? Maybe to prevent it from happening again? Any tips would be appreciated.

Might have been heat related. Have you checked for dust buildup in the case lately?

Yes, you can download hard drive diagnostics from the hard drive manufacturer.

I cleaned out the case about two months ago but will check again, and will check the HD site for diagnostics, thanks!
