I'm thinking you'll need to purchase a copy. Check on E-Bay for choices, tho you'd be better off with Win 2K if your comp can run it. It's more stable than 98.

The fact that Microsoft have stopped supporting it doesn't now make it freeware, sorry but you are still going to have to buy it.
Has this got anything to do with the DOS questions you have been asking?

The reason why I "asked and care" is because 98 is a DOS based operating system and as I am in the computer business, whilst on my travels I would have a look to see if I could find you a cheap copy.
As for that copy for $1.00 it is probably a pirate version with no CD key or you would order it and it wouldn't arrive. |

Legitimate versions seem to be in the $50 to $80 range at the auction sites. And slowly going away. If you decide to buy, get the full version if possible, the OEM if the seller provides the needed hardware, and definitely not the upgrade.
OEM versions are legitimate only if certain requirements are met. |

If you are trying to learn DOS, why not just go find a copy of the real thing (MS-DOS 6.22) or look at Freedos?

Microsoft licensed for sale to the public certain versions of OEM software provided that it was accompanied by processor, memory, hard drive, or motherboard upgrades. Seemed to be just about custom sales agreements since some were licensed one way, others another.
Evidently it was enough of an issue that ebay ended up in an agreement with MS to allow sales of OEM stuff on their site provided that the seller provided the required hardware part along with the OEM software. Most will include the bare minimum announcement " software is provided with the required hardware to qualify for sale although the hardware is not guaranteed to work". Then they provide a stick of memory or a memory chip or other qualifier. At one point OEM software listed there was kicked off if the qualifier wasn't met. Haven't followed it lately so it may no longer be an issue. |
