WIN98SE (problem when the CDROM switch from Real Mode to Protected Mode and the CDROM
I have a problem when the CDROM switch from Real Mode to Protected Mode and the CDROM is not found.
Scenario: Installing a new IDE 80gig Western Dig Hard Drive in my sisters old Gateway 500 Essentials with 500mghz chip. No problems with drive and I am using Gateway restortion CD. I have had no real problems reconizing the drive and I have the following in the directory. C:\> Command BRCD Cabs CDROM CINFIG SYS AUTOEXEC BAT WIN98 And the directory I created to copy the Win98 system files into so I could install OS from the harddrive but I believe/have read there is a problem with reconizing the CD ROM after you reboot ... If I DIR under D drive under D: I see restoration Cd on the CDROM: All the stuff I need Autorun exe - Win95 - 98 ...etc The stuff is there but I keep getting "put the OS / restoration CD and press F1 or F10 to go to ms dos cursor/prompt. So I tried going to the command prompt and changed the drive to D: for CDROM and typed setup bad command tried setup.exe No luck so I am hoping someone can walk me thru this. I am fairly familiar with computers .. Its just I dont work on them but for here and there things.. I could use a hand real quick. Have ICQ if you want . And you may say just use a floppy bootdisk. Well would you believe I have 3 computers sitting in front of me and the only one that has a floppy is the one I am working on. So I need to install from the CDROM. I just need to know what to do next .. Sittinghere at the D:\> PROMT....lol Thanx! |

Let me clarify a few things.
I am using the Restoration CD WIN98 that came with the system. It is doing fine until you need to take the CD out of the CDROM and reboot. It then requests you to put the CD back in .. THIS IS WHERE MY PROBLEM BEGINS. It wont reconize the CDROM. Says put WIN95 WIN98 OS in or clean CD etc. I do also have a copy of WIN98SE...but it is a burnt copy. I have used it before but that was a few years ago. I was hoping to use it to upgrade this system to SE. Ok !!! Frustrated sitting here on this 100 degree day. thanx.. |

Ok I managed to get the copy I had of WIN98SE to load and I plugged the registration numbers in ..It started to install...
(Just need to change over to the WIN98SE ext.) D:\dir WIN95 WIN98SE D:\>WIN98SE\setup It is installing... Then error says this is an upgrade and I would need the original pathway for the OS. Well now I try the restoration CD and point it to there and no luck. So I go back to just the restoration CD and do the same thing I did to start the bootcopy of WIN98SE but this time with the original CD OS. So lets see D:\dir (buy the way how do you slow down the scroll of the dir?) I see WIN95-98 D:\WIN95-98> typed setup no go.... Sitting hoping someone can walk me thru this.. Thanx |

Hi hottz
Actually, the Restoration CD set (should be a set of several CDs) should start automatically, and show a menu of choices. You shouldn't need to copy anything manually to the hard drive ahead of time. Try again - why not wipe the new drive clean first (use the WinMe version of fdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com, since your Western Digital is greater than 64gb). If you don't know how to use the fdisk tool, here's a tutorial - - - http://fdisk.radified.com/ Now you should be ready to start your restore. Just set the computer to boot from the CD drive first (enter Bios Setup to make the change - press the key mentioned in the startup banner "Press F1 (or F2, DEL, or F10, etc.) to Enter Setup"). Interesting that your sister's model came with Windows 98se. The SE models came with WindowsMe. [They had Amd K6-2 500's for their processors] ________________________ If you have another, currently unused, Win95/98 disk around, and your sister doesn't want to keep the original bundled software, you also have the option of running a clean install of Windows 98se - boot from the Win98se CD, and when prompted for proof of prior version, put in your other Win95/98 disk (the Recovery CD will not work for this). Best of luck . . . Gary [p.s. .... I believe the executable that generates the menu for the recovery set is called simply RunMenu.exe ] Last edited by GaryRouth; 07-18-2006 at 03:40 AM. |
