BSOD video dlls

I have a customer who I have been working with trying to resolve a problem for about two months. I have completly run out of ideas. He had a custom system (to be honest don't remember the specs). He kept getting the nv4disp.dll BSOD. He also brought the computer into the store to upgrade video cards to support his 24" LCD native resolution. Seeing as at the time all he had was an AGP slot, he purchased the XFX 7800GS. We also did fresh install of XP Pro. Installed the latest drivers off of NVIDIA's site.

He brought it back a few days later saying that he still gets the blue screens, always referencing nv4disp.dll (one or two occasions it referenced win32k.sys). He says the error comes up when he is maximizing a window, moving a window, or even moving his mouse across the screen (he listed other things but all were everyday tasks like this). We then tested all his hardware again. And downloaded the latest drivers this time off of guru3d.

Once again he was back same problem. He told us he just wanted to build a new system. We built the following system and obviously did another reinstall of XP

Pentium D 940
Asus P5ND2-SLI
2x512MB DDR2 Corsair
XFX 7600GT
Enermax 535W PSU
New Case
Samsung 160GB HD(from old system)
Creative Audigy 2 (from old system)
56K Modem (from old system)
Lite On DVD + DVDRW (from old system)

He took it home and same problem. When he brought it back, We installed old drivers off NVidia's site. Same Problem. Then tried a number of fixes found on various websites. Such as Driver Cleaner. An even older driver. And playing around with some of the video card settings. ( Most of these were actually recommended by XFX). Of course none of them worked.

The customer decided to take Nvidia out of the equation. So we replaced his board with the Asus P5WD2 and replaced his vid card w/ the gigabyte radeon x800XL card. Problem still persists now referencing ati2dvag.dll.

Sorry about the long long post. But any help anyone can provide would be great.

Thanks
Chris

Examine the software he has installed VERY carefully. It could also be interaction with some of the other hardware - like that Audigy maybe?

I had this problem when the multiplier was set to the wrong value. Make sure that on POST it shows the proper value of the CPU. If not, you may have to go into setup and set the proper FSB speed and multiplier.

Example: My CPU is Athlon XP2500+, DDR 333

With the multipier set too low, it was seeing an Athlon 1200, DDR 266 and had multiple screen freezes and degraded performance.

Thanks for the replies. I pulled the sound card and modem and the computer was still doing the same thing. I had suspected the other hardware as well. I will check the multiplier setting when he brings the machine back into the shop.

Another weird thing he told me yesterday. When I was researching the problem most people were having problems while playing games. All of his problems so far have been small things like moving the mouse or resisizing a window. He told me that he decided to try the game that came with the gigabyte x800XL card. It was a demo for newer racing game. He said he was able to play that for over 2 hours. Everything else that he does, the longest he makes it without crashing is a half hour. He told me that and I found it odd so I thought I would pass it on.

Anyone has any other ideas let me know.

Have you tried updating .NET to 2.0 + updates and refreshing the DirectX install with the full redistributable?
