Painfully slow startup
I can't pinpoint exactly when this started happening, but my laptop takes about 10 minutes to fully startup (drive stops spinning). One thing I notice is that the default audible audio startup sequence breaks up during playback (hope that makes sense).
Anyways I'm using Win XP SP2 and running IE7 Beta for a browser. I've ran all my virus software, ad-aware, and spybot. I've tried to disable as many startup processes that I can through msconfig. I try to monitor the processes through the task manager and the only thing that is running is the system idle process, which is normally at about 10-15%. Here are a couple of my msconfig screens. Is there something here that doesn't look right, and or any suggestions for me? Thanks |

You have way too much starting up in config, I have a Toshiba laptop and the only things starting are the touchpad and AVG7 (my antivirus).
Disable everything and then start by re-enabling things one at a time untill you get it to run as you want it to not as realplayer and all that other garbage is trying to do. Half that junk you have in there is phoning home looking for updates, it just isn't needed.

It's probably the dumprep 0-k. take it out of your startup (msconfig). also, no need for anything other than your antivirus, firewall, ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor, & SystemTray. Also, once you uncheck everything (especially the dumprep), if your system is still running slow, try uninstalling IE7. I was running beta 2 and it kept my system at a crawl. I uninstalled it and everything was fine. To uninstall it if needed, go to add/remove programs... make sure 'show updates' is checked. Scroll down to the beginning of the 'Windows' patches and find/uninstall IE7.
Also, for performance and privacy, I'd get completely rid of Real Player and Quicktime. You can replace them with the Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=re...B1gqVa2oY3YINA http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=re...ovc2LNsWJowCkg Let us know how it goes. |

Ok thanks. I've unchecked everything except my antivirus. I need to figure out which one my media connect is though, because I need that to be running to stream to my 360.
I've also reverted my IE, I was having other issues with that anyways, in regards to forums. For some reason IE7 hates text boxes when posting in discussion forums. I've had multiple issues. Just updated all my security and will try restarting now. I'll let you know. Thanks again |

Well, I can't say for certain if the startup issue is resolved, still seems slow, and the log in audio still breaks up, but getting rid of IE7 sure worked nice. I didn't realize how much my browsing had slowed. My pages now snap instantly.

Have a read of the prerequisites in the securities forum and post a HJT log back here for us to take a look at, you may have something hiding in the background.

It's OK and easier to read if you just paste the log file here.

Have you cleared out your temporary internet files? you have a bit of gaming garbage hanging around in there.

Thanks for taking a look at this:
I didn't think there was much for gaming, at least I don't do a lot of that on my laptop. Except for the party poker deal. I usually stay on top of getting rid of the temp files and cookies. |

Once it finally starts up it runs great. But it really seems to lag after the desktop appears, and if I try to open IE or Outlook whilst the HD light is flashing......lookout, another 5 minute wait guaranteed. It's like I have to wait until I confirm that everything is at an idle, then go about my business.

Unless someone else has any ideas I think I would now start with some spring cleaning as in: registry cleaning, defrag, and clearing out all your temporary and unwanted files.
Try the "ToniArts" Easycleaner you can download it here: http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0....eaner&tag=srch There are a few good cleaning tools on there just DON'T use the "duplicate file remover" that one can damage system files. |

Another thing you could try is getting rid of all of these with HJT:

Well that was weird. After I cleaned the registry and temp files I restarted and got a blue star in the tray (never seen it before). I clicked it and said I may be a victim of software counterfeiting. It directed me to MS and said I needed a genuine version of windows. Well then after a few minutes I got the update shield so I clicked that, it installed necessary updates, restarted and no more blue star..........guess it's gone now

You did not follow the instructions for posting your HJT log - I see Word, Outlook, and Adobe Reader running! You need to get a log IMMEDIATELY after reboot before manually opening ANYTHING. If you DID in fact make that log properly, no wonder it takes time to start up - opening Word, Outlook, and Adobe takes time!

I appologize for that. I really did think I had everything closed. I just went back and verified that those programs weren't running upon startup through another log file.
5 minutes does seem kind of long yet doesn't it? I guess I'll just have to live with it. I just let it hibernate 99% of the time . Thanks for all your help everyone. I appreciate it.

Sometimes it would be best to start off fresh and do a format and reinstall a of the OS.
If that doesn't solve the issue, your HDD could be dying. Run a HDD diagnostic from the manufacturer and see how the test goes. |
