Is it worth it?

I was wondering if it was worth getting windows media centre 2005 just to use for the os alone. I wasn't planning on hooking up my tv and such to it at all.

Well from what I see in your post, I do not know why you would want to buy this media edition if you do not plan on using the full capabilities of it. I think, and I may be wrong, but Windows Media Center has a base of Windows XP Pro. So if you do not want to use all those features, I would suggest just the professional version, or even the home, depending on your usage. However, I do suggest the media edition. I have it and love it. I have my TV, DVD, VCR, all hooked into it and can record freely. It has a cool interface within it as well. Can you find it cheap or something?

If there is a chance that you will use the capabilities in the future, then why not? If you absolutely know that you will never use your PC as a media center, though, then I would stick with XP Home.

I wouldn't bother paying that extra for Windows MCE, all it really is extra is a little media program and some stupid dancing people! Stick with what you have and if you feel that in the near future you want dancing people on your desktop then do so buy MCE but if you just want the Media thing they have I suggest you try Yahoo Go or Meedio.

Thumbs down

I agree when you say there are stupid dancing people. But honestly, have you sat down and looked at all the features that Windows Media Center Edition has? It is so much more than little dancing people and some catchy interfaces. Sure you can go out and buy make-shift software that does the same thing, but it is so much easier when it is all incorporated within the Windows Software. Recording, playing, music, images, video, radio, filing...it's all there. And how cool is the remote? It is nice sitting across the room and having access to a computer. But this is all just my opinion.

The latest version of MCE is no longer based on Pro - it's been demoted to Home. No advanced networking ability and security any more.

Well I was able to find it at one store near me for $109 which is pretty good but that only includes the CD's and no remote. I was just thinking about getting it for a bit of a change, something a little different looking and fresh from xp. Who knows...maybe I'll use it for all it's worth too once I get going with it.
