Help my computer turned crappy!
I'm really laggy when I play games, I have cable internet, and the game i'm playing was made in 1996 and requires a 233 mhz computer. But it happens with all games. It will start out ok, then i will play for like 5 or 10 minutes and the lag hits. Even if i exit the game and return the lag will still be there. However if i restart my comp, then it will be normal for about 5 minutes, and then the lag will start again.
Someone told me it could be a heat issue?!?!? I do leave my compter on all the time, and when im not home I leave my computer on and logged into a certain game. This never used to happen....but it keeps getting worse! It used to be like days before it would happen, then it was down to hours, and now its down to minutes! I know its not spyware/adware/virus stuff, And I have a mcafree/firewall/security center running at all times. Also I have full version registry mechanic that I run everyday. Here are my computer specs.... if you can find anything wrong i'd be very grateful CPU information: Processor Name : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.93GHz Processor Description: x86 Family 15 Model 4 1. Go into add/remove programs and uninstall EVERYTHING that has the name McAfee in it.
2. Go to http://free.grisoft.com and download AVG Free - install it. 3. Make sure you are behind a router, and turn on the builtin Windows XP SP2 firewall. 4. Get rid of this: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe /server /startmonitor /deaf |

dont mind my newbness, but why uninstall mcafee for a freeware version?
Its $90 dollars worth of software for the mcafee virus scan, firewall, and privacy software and has protected my computer very well from many torjan and virus attacks. I did get rid of O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe /server /startmonitor /deaf I think this is from when I updated from comcast support agent to comcast desktop doctor |

Because anything that says McAfee or Norton on it sucks.
If you have doubts, just search the threads here regarding both names. Just because you paid money for it doesn't mean it's better. I use nothing but freeware on my own systems and all of my customers systems and I don't have any of the problems you do. -Kev

It's $90 worth of bloat. If you feel more comfortable paying for an antivirus, then buy AVG Professional - it's the same thing, just more fully featured and comes with e-mail tech support. It uses the exact same engine and definitions as the free version though. It is simply an antivirus, not a full security package. If you really want a Swiss Army Knife security package, look at Trend Micro, theirs seems to be the least bloated with the fewest issues.
I'm not going to slam McAfee and Norton - they do try to put a quality package out there, but I've fixed a LOT of poorly running machines by uninstalling them. |
